The Fire & Life Safety Systems Design Technologist will be responsible for supporting our fire services business development and technical delivery teams in quoting, planning, and executing a variety of fire and life safety systems solutions for our clients throughout Canada. Some of the additional expectations of this role include:


  • Evaluating documents, drawings, systems, plans, customer requests, and non-conformance issues to determine specific solutions and recommendations for customers and management;
  • Creating fire detection and emergency signaling system designs and layout plans, schematics, equipment specifications, related design calculations, system narratives, and construction specifications;
  • Developing integration designs between life safety and building services systems as required to comply with all applicable Codes, Standards and system operating objectives;
  • Carrying out Designs on Sprinkler Systems, Foam Systems, Wet and Dry Chemical Systems, Mobile Fire Suppression Systems and Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems;
  • Proficient use of Autocad, and Sprinkler Cal / Pipe Net, or other Fire Design Software;
  • Producing detailed installation and commissioning work plans identifying acceptable installation methodologies, sequences, post-installation testing and commissioning and other associated critical installation parameters in accordance with applicable Codes and Standards;
  • Applying various NFPA, CAN/ULC and jurisdictional Codes and Standards in the development of design drawings and specifications for fire protection and life safety systems;
  • Developing estimates and take offs of material and labour requirements for work scopes;
  • Providing engineering review of shop drawings, construction oversight and inspection, field surveys and systems acceptance testing for fire protection and life safety systems;
  • Liaising with internal technical staff and, where required, clients and on-site supervision, to ensure high levels of customer service and effective execution of work scopes; and
  • Managing assigned projects including associated project reporting, correspondence and documentation.


The successful candidate must be a professional, highly motivated, self-starter with a keen attention to detail and the ability to deliver high quality, safety-focused solutions on-time, every time. They will bring with them strong technical knowledge and communication and relationship building skills, with an ability to work both collaboratively with team members, as well as independently, to deliver dependable service and support to our customers.  Given the service and solutions focus of our business, they must be able to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and flexibility to address changing situations and priorities. An ability to translate technical analysis, engineered drawings and schematics and project plans into the delivery of meaningful business outcomes for our clients and our business would be valued.  Knowledge or experience with some (or all) of the following codes and standards: National Building Code of Canada, National Fire Code of Canada, various NFPA Standards 13, 14, 16, 17, 17A, 20, 101, 2001, etc.,  CAN/ULC-S524, CAN/ULC-S561, and CAN/ULC-S1001 is required.  They should also be proficient in reading technical drawings and specifications; evaluating formal drawing standards for quality control and drafting with AutoCAD.  Use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) platforms would be considered an asset.


A candidate with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in and engineering or the fire and/or life safety industry, preferably in a multi- jurisdictional environment, combined with a diploma or degree in Engineering Technology, Fire Protection Engineering Technology or related field would be preferred. Combinations of education and experience will be considered. A Certified Technician and/or Technologist accreditation from a nationally recognized governing body (OACETT, NICET, ASTTBC, etc.) would be preferred. The successful candidate must be able and willing to submit for and maintain federal and facility-specific security clearance(s).  Some travel may be required. Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
